INTRODUCTION
by: Allen Seale, Architect
I have been doing my own remodeling work on my own house(s) for several years.
Anything I did not know how to do, I learned by doing or by getting good advice
before I started. When I looked closer at the details required to rework the kitchen
cabinets I started to have second thoughts and called an old friend to advise
me. And thank goodness I did! I
called Dannye Packer who came to my house and showed me exactly what would happen
if I tried to do this kind of work on my own I quickly realized that I was
very close to creating a mess that was going to cost me a great deal of time and
expense. I discovered that it was going to take a great deal of patience,
tools and experience and if not done correctly, I could easily end up with a very
expensive disaster and have to start all over as well. Had
I just painted them, I would never have been satisfied and I would have wasted
a great deal of time and expense. If I had tried to reface them myself,
I would have overlooked some very fine details that would have caused the job
to be very unsatisfactory. Replacing them was an option, but the expense
was out of the question and the quality was not as good as the oak wood of my
current cabinets. As
Dannye showed me the potential problems and the best solutions, I became convinced.
Since that time we have worked together to provide this same information for you
that we hope will help you see what I learned. You too can save money, end
up with a quality job and enjoy the experience of working with a true professional
who really cares!

and Quality Assurance go hand in hand
with Service and Communication.
After 4
years of college I entered the plastic fabrication industry, then moved into construction
management before becoming a self-employed general contractor. Later, I
became more specialized and worked as a Sears kitchen cabinet refacer.
During these 35 years I have seen just about everything concerning residential
construction. I know what's right or wrong, level or plumb, square or
out of square. This experience has become very valuable when accessing the
needs of my clients and in providing a good finished product.
Along with QUALITY
comes SERVICE and in my book, you should treat your customer
the way you would like to be treated, as a friend. Along with this, I have put
together the best materials and hardware available for refacing cabinets.
Cabinet refacing
is done by taking the existing kitchen cabinets and gluing Formica to the bottoms,
sides, and fronts. We also replace all existing doors, drawer fronts using
an RTF (Rigid Thermal Foil) door which is made to stand up to the abusive wear
and tear of kitchen use. These doors are more durable than the painted doors
of the past and the surface can resist wear and scratches. They are seamless
which makes for easy cleaning with a wet sponge. I
replace all door hinges with a hidden type hinge by Blum, which is unbelievably
strong and durable. Blum also makes a drawer slide that will hold up to
75 lbs. per drawer. The pulls are from many different manufacturers, but
are usually displayed at any Home Depot or Loews. I also install Formica
countertops, square back, cove backing or post form; makes no difference.
Color matching requires a great deal of experience and I have a set of colors
that match so close you will never notice any difference.
This whole process takes
from 7-10 working days. I custom purchase and install everything so I do not have
to maintain a high overhead inventory and I do all the work myself. I do
one job at a time so you get 100% of my attention from start to finish.
It is always best to
DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME.

Many people
consider painting over their old cabinets thinking they will save money and get
a new look at the same time. This rarely works because very soon, the cabinet
surface starts to show the spot wear and the paint is never as smooth and uniform
as the rest of the décor and starts to stick out as being inferior.
Paint simply does not give that hard durable smooth surface that is easy to clean
and maintain. Formica refacing stays the way I leave it for many years.
For those that think
that they can reface their own cabinets, I simply ask that you investigate the
process and the potential problems thoroughly before you start. What seems easy
at first has many pitfalls and what appears to be a simple project can quickly
turn out to be a real nightmare. Trying to take over a job where the owner
has attempted to glue on Formica and failed is much more difficult to make right
again. |
